Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Are the fiction and non-fiction books included in the Guided Reading Units along with the student and teacher workbooks?  Unfortunately not. The literature books are available through the units4homeschool.com website or your local children's bookstore. However, we recommend that you check out your local free library as the literature should be readily available there.

What are the advantages of using the Guided Reading Units for home school?  One of the advantages of using the Guided Reading Units is that they incorporate Reading Strategies, as well as Science, Social Studies, History and Self-Concept topics. You are saving time by teaching many subjects at the same time. Another advantage is that these 4-6 week units allow children to make connections across the curriculum and to interact with fiction and non-fiction literature.

Why are the units geared toward reading ages rather than grade level? Children are individuals and do not learn at the same rate. Therefore, a child's reading ability is determined more by the their depth of language knowledge and their ability to comprehend both fiction and non-fiction text.

Why do you use "read-aloud books" with older children? Read-aloud books are short enough to entice remedial readers but are often sophisticated enough for upper grade humor and are laced with roll-of-the-tongue vocabulary that appeals to all ages. In read-aloud books the theme is often relevant to all age groups and the illustrations can be enjoyed by everyone.
